A Lesson In Forecasting.... WELL LEARNED!
All morning, things started to look good for the area between Pratt, KS and Dodge City, KS. No naturally, you (as a chaser) plan to head out to your target area. Then, after getting on the road a little late, you see something that catches your eye. I big system brewing about 150 South of your target area that originates in the panhandles of TX and OK. So, Darren and I headed South towards Wichita, KS to try to head off the course of this system. (Instead of going to Dodge City, KS as originally Planed) The Tornado Watch (#27) is issued for the Panhandles just as we get almost to Wichita. Even though it covered Dodge City, KS, its obvious that the potent part of the storms in the panhandles are stalling and not moving fast. Darkness has almost fallen, so chasing anything at night could be a major disappointment, so we chalk it up and head back north to Kansas City. .....
Then.... a new Meso Discussion falls in to place.....
Between Pratt and Dodge City northward. Then comes Tornado Watch #28
Lesson? ALWAYS STICK TO YOUR FORECASTING and IF you are thinking about changing your mind, re-forecast the area you are "thinking" about!! -Marshall
4-24-2007
On Monday, April 23, 2007, it was the talk of the Weather Community. Predictions were pouring out from The Weather Channel of a "Major Tornado Outbreak" to occur the following day to include Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. I requested Justin and Josh to accompany my to trek into the center core of where the system "appeared" to be generating the greatest potential for Severe Storms, and above all TORNADOES.
The Soundings of Dodge City, Kansas was quite the adrenalin rush.
Main Convection Outlook for 4-24-2007
We left Kansas City at 12:00PM and headed south toward Wichita, Kansas. The first TORNADO WATCH (#172) had been issued for Central Kansas from 10:50am to 7pm CDT.
We decided to stop at the Truck Stop in Beto Junction, KS and check out Soundings, Shear, and patterns.
While at the TA Truck Stop. I had the pleasure of meeting Eric, a Meteorology student fro Purdue. Eric flew to Kansas for the action and was excited about running on to us. Eric is now a part of my team (even if he is from Indiana).
Eric and I observed the conditions along with sounding and other readings in the area. We had winds from the south and very high clouds the seem be be blowing east.
The sun had finally decided to show his face for a minute or two. It got warmer rather quickly and winds started pick up to over 30 knots.
We were debating just hanging around for a while and monitor development from where we were. Even though we weren't under any watch right where we were at, it seemed to have potential. So we agreed to stay put.
About 30 minutes after our decision, a new mesoscale discussion was posted that was for the area that we were at.
LONG RADAR LOOPS REVEAL THE PRESENCE OF A POSSIBLE GRAVITY WAVE...NOTED ON COMPOSITE REFLECTIVITY DATA THIS MORNING EXITING ERN OKLAHOMA. THAT WAVE APPEARS TO BE TIED TO CONVECTIVE INITIATION OVER CNTRL MO THIS AFTN. THE AREA BEING MONITORED FOR A WATCH IS ACROSS CNTRL/ERN KS INTO WRN MO...WHERE SUBSIDENCE IN THE WAKE OF GRAVITY WAVE IS CURRENTLY INHIBITING CONVECTION. THE 18Z SOUNDING FROM TOPEKA SUGGESTS THAT WEAK CAPPING STILL EXISTED...BUT THAT SFC TEMPS IN THE MID 70S COMBINED WITH INCREASING CONVERGENCE SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO BREAK THE CAP.
VISIBLE SATELLITE SHOWS POCKETS OF CLEARING WITHIN THE STRATOCUMULUS FIELD...WHICH IS ALLOWING FOR GREATER HEATING TO OCCUR EARLY THIS AFTN. EXPECTED THERMODYNAMIC/KINEMATIC PROFILES APPEAR SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS WITH TORNADIC POTENTIAL.
So, now we bagan studying things alittle more close to determine ourselves when and if the Cap would break and where the heart of the action would take place.
While waiting for the issuance of a Watch, another newcomer joined in to the group. Dave, a constuction worker from Kansas City, asked to tag along for a bit.
At 3:35 the Watch was issued for our location AND an updated Convective Outlook which added a HIGH in Texas area was posted.
One of the issues that really concerned us was the action going on in eastern Colorado.
7 Tornado warning and counting. All in the same area, BUT, this area was not under any type of Watch.
Then someone got the "Bright Idea" to issue a Mesoscale Descussion for that area. (after nearly a dozen warnings... imagine that!)
BUT... right under the MD Icon. SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL - WATCH UNLIKELY
Note: There were several TORNADO WARNINGS that followed this MD for several HOURS... Still there was never a watch issued.
To make the rest of the day short and sweet. We all traveled down Hwy 75 to Yates Center to intercept the line that had produced tornadoes in Oklahoma. While we did find ONE mesocyclonic storm, its was short lived and rained itself out. No Tornado, no hail. just some impressive lightning and lots of wind and rain.
Dave left us to get back to his gilfriend (who was freaking out that he was taking forever to get home) and the rest of us went back to Beto Junction.
There, we witnessed some impressive weather. One of these was a large isolated Cloud mass that looked furious and was growing before our eyes. It disappeared before our eyes just as fast. Mammatus clouds were to the east of us.

And then...
This long and large cigar-shaped cloud was rapid traveling traveling under the system and westerly. The system was traveling north east. Some VIDEO and PICTURES may follow soon. KEEP CHECKING BACK!!
I think it is noteworthy that there was only ONE Warning issued in Kansas for the duration of both Watches. That was in Reno, KS. -Marshall
HMMM.... MAJOR OUTBREAK??? I was saddened to hear that some lives were lost in Southern Texas in a storm that ripped in from Mexico killing five members of a family that took refuge in the bathtub of their mobilehome in Eagle Pass, TX.
Slide Show of the DAY.... Special Thanks to ERIC!!
